Academic Vita

Gabriele Schabacher is Professor of Media and Culture Studies at the Institute for Film, Theatre, Media, and Culture Studies (FTMK) at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and deputy spokesperson of the CRC 1482 “Studies in Human Categorization”. She is principal investigator of the project »Urban Control Regimes. Train Stations as Infrastructure of Human Differentiation« and the Concept Forum 5 “Agentivity and Perspectivity” (together with Tobias Boll).

She studied philosophy, psychology, and German philology in Cologne and Bochum and received her doctorate in 2004 with a thesis on autobiography theory. She worked at the Collaborative Research Center 427 “Media and Cultural Communication” in Cologne, as academic coordinator of the DFG Research Training Group “Locating Media” in Siegen and as Professor of History and Theory of Cultural Techniques at the Bauhaus University Weimar. In Mainz, she has etablished the masters' program “Media and Culture Studies”.

Research

Her research focuses on cultural and media theory, media history, the mediality of transportation and infrastructure, cultural techniques of repair, digital surveillance regimes, seriality and autobiography. She recently published a book on the processuality of infrastructure (Infrastruktur-Arbeit. Kulturtechniken und Zeitlichkeit der Erhaltung, Berlin 2022).
