Academic Vita

Tom Ullrich studied media, culture, photography and film studies at Bauhaus University Weimar, Lumière University Lyon 2 and Sorbonne Nouvelle University Paris 3. Since 2017, he has been a researcher and lecturer at the Institute for Film, Theater, Media, and Culture Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.

Research

Tom Ullrich's doctoral thesis “Barricades. Media History and Cultural Techniques of Revolution in 19th Century Paris” examines the interrelations between barricade construction, street fighting and urban planning in Paris (1830-1871). As a postdoctoral researcher, he is analyzing early train station infrastructures in France and England as part of the project “Urban Control Regimes” in media culture studies. Together with Sascha Dickel, he heads the research area C “Human Boundaries and Material Infrastructures”.

His research focuses on cultural techniques and media history (photography, maps, prints, film), urban studies and history (especially Paris), transportation infrastructures (train stations, streets), historical surveillance and security practices, and revolutions and protest cultures.
