The exhibition ‘Menschen Sort[ier]en’ by the Collaborative Research Centre 1482 Human Differentiation will be on display from 23 June to 17 July at the Schule des Sehens on the campus of Mainz University.
We all categorise each other according to gender, age, class or social class, for example, or according to how we relate to each other. We see skin colour, clothing, possibly a disability. We hear how someone speaks and sometimes we even smell each other. Based on these impressions, we categorise each person into further categories. These distinctions between people are not simply there or naturally given. They only come about through our sorting work. Some distinctions are maintained by norms or infrastructures, for example, while others are dropped over time. Some we don't even notice, others we argue about.
The exhibition ‘Sort[ing] People’ thematises these processes. The title of the exhibition is deliberately ambiguous and is intended to express this: Human sorts come from the fact that we sort people. Spatial stagings illustrate each of the types of differentiation presented in order to offer practical examples, interactive offers and concrete food for thought.
We would like to thank the German Research Foundation, the Georg Forster Forum and the Schule des Sehens for their support.
Accessibility:
An overview of barrier-free access to the building can be found here (the Schule des Sehens is the small building directly in front of P1 on the map). There will be an audio guide that will make large parts of the exhibition accessible to people with visual impairments. And if you need assistance or have any questions on site, there is always someone on site who will be happy to help you. If you have any questions or specific needs, please contact Friederike Brinker.
