Identity/Identities in Transition
Reading and Conversation with Mithu Sanyal
This event will be held in English!
Who decides who we are? What categories do we use to describe ourselves and others? And how do these ideas shape the way we live together?
At a time when identity politics, cultural appropriation, and questions of belonging spark heated debates, writer and cultural scholar Mithu Sanyal addresses these topics with provocative and humorous sharpness. Through her novels (Identitti, 2021,transl. 2022; Antichristie, 2024), she challenges conventional notions of "race," gender, and culture. Rather than offering simple answers, Sanyal’s texts invite reflection on the complexity of these discourses. She deliberately plays with ambiguities and crosses boundaries—both in content and form.
On the panel: Dr. Mithu Sanyal, Prof. Dr. Mita Banerjee, Dr. Sabina Fazli, Moderation: Friederike Brinker.
This event is part of a Spring School for international (post-)doctoral researchers. The reading and discussion provide a space to collectively reflect on the historical entanglements and cultural dimensions of differentiation and to engage in dialogue about the fluid aspects of identity.
